Primeiro avistamento nos Açores da Orca-Pigmeia (Faresa attenuata)!

ENG: In the North Coast of São Miguel Island, Azores, history was made on 20/06/2024: the
first-ever sighting of the poorly known Pygmy Killer Whale (Feresa attenuata). To our
knowledge, this is the first official sighting of this species in the Azores. This
monumental discovery, achieved by the extraordinary efforts of menbers of Picos de
Aventura: Skipper Natalia Pérez, Biologist Fátima Pérez-Neira, and Lookout Milton
Pedro, raises new questions about our understanding of this enigmatic species’
distribution and behavior. As ocean temperatures continue to rise maybe this warm
water species will become more and more frequent, emphasizing the critical need for
ongoing research. This sighting of pygmy killer whales has raised the cetacean
diversity around the Azores to 29 species, accounting for nearly one-third of all known
cetacean species worldwide.
Our dedicated team at Picos de Aventura is already preparing to officially report this
sighting to the scientific community.
PT: No dia 20/06/2024, na costa norte da Ilha de São Miguel, nos Açores, fez-se história: o
primeiro avistamento de sempre da enigmática orca-Pigmeia (Feresa attenuata). Este é
o primeiro avistamento oficial desta espécie nos Açores. Esta descoberta monumental,
presenciada pela equipa da Picos de Aventura: Skipper Natalia Pérez, a Bióloga Fátima
Pérez-Neira e o Vigia Milton Pedro, levanta novas questões sobre a nossa compreensão
relativamente a distribuição e comportamento desta espécie enigmática. À medida que
as temperaturas dos oceanos continuam a subir, talvez esta espécie de águas quentes se
torne cada vez mais frequente, levantando assim, a necessidade crítica de uma
investigaçao mais aprofundada. Este avistamento da Orca-Pigmeia elevou a diversidade
de cetáceos nos Açores para 29 espécies, representando quase um terço de todas as
espécies conhecidas de cetáceos no mundo. A nossa equipa de biologos da Picos de
Aventura já está a adiantar uma publicaçao para divulgar esta avistamento épico à
comunidade cientifica.
