PREFÁCIO DE TIMOR-LESTE O DOSSIER SECRETO 1973-75

26/10, 08:28] Jose Ramos-Horta: Hello Pat Brother and Mentor…from KL…TL joining ASEAN this morning. Your and your family contribution to this consecration of TL has been immense. And I want you to know this, to celebrate as well. May God Always Blesses You. J Ramos-Horta
Pat will be remembered by many, a profound believer in justice, freedom, human dignity. Tireless, calm presence, extremely meticulous in research and writing. I took Pat’s advice on many occasions. He was always there, everywhere, anytime, never away. Even as death approached he still wrote to me with information and new ideas.
Some samples:
“Jose. An idea! Am struck by the number of young Timorese working in Australia, but wondering if they are getting maximum benefit educationally, even entrepreneurially, from their experience. E.g. some 30 working at world first Sundrop farms in South Australia. They are picking tomatoes but are they also learning how Sundrop is supplying 17,000 tonnes of tomatoes pa to supermarkets without needing fertile soil, using desalinated seawater, and power from sunlight. Futuristic but sounds perfect for TL. Ditto other enterprises Timorese are working in (with good support from local Catholic parishes too).
[18/10, 12:05] Pat Walsh: Hi Jose. I’m in hospital and regretfully won’t make it to your Oration on Monday. Needless to say it will be an enormous boost to Jeanie as she struggles with Eric’s death.
Could I just mention that an organisation second to none has kept unrivalled records about Timor since 1974, including on Balibo, and would benefit from a mention in your Oration, if it fits. 51 years later, Timor Information Service, now CHART (Clearing House for Archival Records on Timor) is still active including holding all my records, and currently being plundered by Anthony Coxeter. Founded by Fr Maurie Heading, SJ and John Waddingam, your Ordem last year was very welcome to this unheralded but fundamental service. Pat
[18/10, 12:07] Jose Ramos-Horta: What a coincidence…I was just typing your name when your message came through..
[18/10, 12:08] Jose Ramos-Horta: Pls send me names…I am listing some from my head.
[18/10, 13:12] Pat Walsh: Good on you Jose!!
Maurie Heading SJ, John Waddingham, Cecily Gilbert- key movers. Others not closely involved with TIS or Chart, but actively supportive, people like Bill Armstrong, Bill Roberts, Mark Raper SJ, Richard Tanter, David Hill, Helen Hill, Jim Ralston (Unions), Dick Wooton (Uniting Church). Many thanks. Pat

[26/10, 09:08] Pat Walsh: From Pat: Thanks for the inquiry. It means a lot.
Annie here Jose. He’s had a rough night. Ill keep you posted. Xx
[03/11, 20:37] Jose Ramos-Horta: Hello Annie…Just checking about Pat…how is he? What doctor says? Glimmer of hope? Much much love, many many prayers, hoping God pay some attention to our prayers for Pat and not too overwhelmed by humans self- harming with wars and harming Planet Earth.
[09/11, 12:03] Pat Walsh: Dear Jose. Pat here and hopefully alleviating any concerns you have after not hearing from me for a week. Apologies. I’m still in hospital. Due for another dose of chemo this week but doctors are happy with my progress and could refer me to rehab soon primarily to strengthen me physically as I have lost a lot of condition. Tx for your concern and prayers.
I’d like to send you a couple of longer bits related to your closing sentiments. Is WA best or what email is best for you?
Thankyou and God bless you. Pat
[09/11, 12:09] Jose Ramos-Horta: So pleased to hear the blessed news of your recovery! God heard our prayers!
[09/11, 12:10] Jose Ramos-Horta: Continuing prayers and hope common sense prevails in Heaven so God keeps you among us earthly people. Heaven can wait.
[24/12, 14:54] Pat Walsh: Hi Jose. It’s Annie here. Pat’s chemo treatment hasnt worked and his cancer has spread. He’s been in a lot of pain recently. Today we brought him home from hospital and with the support of the palliative care team we will look after him here. He has deteriorated very quickly and Mayra Suzannah Patricia and I feel our time with him is limited.
Pat loved seeing you in October and your relationship over so many years has been important to him and I’m sure for you too. I wanted you to know how it is now. Love Annie
[24/12, 14:56] Jose Ramos-Horta: Oh God that’s so unfair. ☹️😭
[24/12, 16:15] Pat Walsh: Yes our sentiments exactly 🥰❤️
[29/12, 19:38] Pat Walsh: Hi Jose, it’s Annie here.
I’m afraid I have sad news. Pat died this evening at home.
Like us, I’m sure you will be devastated. It is a tragedy for all of us.
We are sending the message below to friends.
Annie, Mayra, Suzannah and Patricia want to let you know that Pat died at 5:40pm on Monday 29 December 2025 at home with family by his side.
He came home from hospital on Christmas Eve and we have had some precious days being with him and caring for him.
We have told stories, sung songs, hugged him and each other, cooked, played games with the kids, dug up his potatoes in the garden, cried and played Danny Boy on repeat.
It has been a very special time.
We have also read him the messages of love and gratitude for his extraordinary life that have come in from family, friends and colleagues around the world.
It is likely the funeral will not be for a couple of weeks. We will let you know as soon as possible.
Thank you for your love and support.
xx
[29/12, 19:49] Jose Ramos-Horta: Oh God so so so sad, such a loss, a decent, caring, compassionate and passionate fighter for truth, justice.
[29/12, 19:50] Jose Ramos-Horta: My deepest sorrow, condolences to you Annie and all in the family.
