Forte de Nossa Senhora da Piedade de Solor. Fica hoje na Indonésia. Foi construido em 1553 por padres dominicanos portugueses. Era a base do nosso comércio com Timor quando os portugueses ainda não se tinham instalado lá. Atacado várias vezes por javaneses e holandeses que obrigaram os portugueses a refugiar-se no reino de Larantuka, ali perto. Hoje está quase em ruinas mas é preciso recuperá-lo pois é um marco fundamental das relações de Portugal com a Indonésia e Timor-Leste. Já contactei a Gulbenkian que tem recuperado algumas igrejas lá ao pé na ilha de Adonara. Estive lá o ano passado.

«(…) Qualquer um pode defender que a morte destas altas individualidades foi devida a uma sabotagem perpetrada por criminosos e ou que maléficas forças estranhas, ainda que nunca identificadas, influenciaram ou provocaram o trágico desfecho que conhecemos.

Mas o que não pode ser ignorado é que quando o motor crítico de um avião com as características do Cessna 421 para à descolagem e não são seguidos os procedimentos adequados, as várias resistências aerodinâmicas surgidas, principalmente a combinação do torque e do fator P (assimetria), não conseguem ser vencidas com a potência do único motor que resta. São fenómenos explicados através de princípios da Física, princípios imutáveis, isto é, são “factos e não opiniões”!

O acidente de Camarate começou a desenhar-se muito antes de ter ocorrido. Dada a quantidade de anomalias graves de que o avião padecia, todas elas classificadas de “NO GO” (não vá voar!), aquele Cessna 421 A “Golden Eagle” deveria estar terminantemente proibido de voar.

Se fossemos fazer agora uma investigação do acidente, com o rigor do GPIAA, Gabinete de Investigação e Prevenção de Acidentes e seguíssemos todas as fases da investigação, ou seja a Informação Factual, a História do Voo, a Análise, as Conclusões e Recomendações de Segurança, chegaríamos à conclusão de que não foram respeitados os procedimentos de “antes da descolagem”; não se verificou a quantidade combustível a bordo nem a sua distribuição; a descolagem foi feita NÃO a partir do princípio da pista de serviço, como deveria ter sido, mas a partir de uma posição em que foi desperdiçado mais de metade do seu comprimento; aquando da paragem do motor crítico, o hélice deste motor não foi posto em “bandeira” e, finalmente, houve engano na seleção da válvula do combustível que foi posta erradamente na posição “OFF”, desligada, o que impediu que o motor esquerdo, alimentado através dos tanques da asa contrária, tivesse arrancado para, no derradeiro momento, salvar a situação.

Verificaram-se, portanto, erros humanos em cadeia, (Human Factors) houve falta de coordenação NÃO tendo o piloto à direita (monitoring pilot) servido como barreira de segurança para interromper a sucessão de erros cometidos.

Esta sucessão de falhas e de omissão de procedimentos que deu origem ao acidente, foi confirmada não apenas por peritos nacionais como os que fizeram os relatórios da DGAC mas também por peritos vindos, expressamente, de fora como o da Cessna, pelo investigador independente de acidentes de aviação Mr. Eric Newton, pelo professor da Universidade de Edimburgo Mr.J.K. Mason, pelo Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, pelos peritos da National Transportation Safety Board e por outras prestigiadas personalidades do mundo aeronáutico internacional. (…)»

EFFECTS OF PORTUGUESE RULE IN KERALA

Impact of rule of Portuguese in Kerala

The Portuguese ruled in Kerala for nearly a century and a half. There were many effects caused by their rule.

The Portuguese were the first of European empires to establish a power system in India. They first arrived in Kerala, when Vasco da Gama set foot on Kappad beach in 1498. They then expanded their power slowly here and later shifted their capital to Goa, largely due to endless conflicts and battles with the local kings and the other European colonial powers with same aspirations. They were also the last colonial power to leave India, 14 years after the Indian Independence from Britain.

The Portuguese culture that dominated in the state for a century and half has donated lot of things to the Kerala culture as well. These are the primary changes induced by the Portuguese intrusion.

The Portuguese limited the power of Zamorin who had been trying to establish a centralised power structure in Kerala. They created formed alliances with the enemies of Zamorin and triggered mutual hostility among the local kings.

It helped Mysore Sultans to conquer Kerala.

The Portuguese encouraged agriculture and experimented scientifical and innovative reforms. They imported productive cocunut seeds and expanded the cocunut production. The coir trade also flourished. New vegetables and trees were introduced to Kerala including Papaya, Pine Apple, Cashew, Watermelon, Indian Beans and Guava.

They introduced European style in architecture here, mainly in Churches and residential buildings. Bunglaws of Euopean model started to be built. The use of cosmetics and other items rose gradually. They also brought their style of dress here.

The Portuguese popagated the use of European weapons and weaponry in Kerala. The building of forts got popular. Fort Manuel, built in 1503 at Kochi was the first fort in India built by Europeans. The Keralites learned to use and make guns and canons.

The Portuguese focused on building new towns and markets. It led to the development of Calicut, Cochin and Chaliyam while old towns, such as Kollam and Kodungalloor, were relegated.

They promoted Roman Catholicism and as a part of it, established colleges in Kochi and Angamaly. Portuguese and Latin languages were promoted. They built printing press at Kochi and Vypin.

The art form of Chavittunadakam was a result of the blend of Protuguese and Kerala cultures. It has similarities with the classical art Kathakali.

The Portuguese contributed many words to Malayalam. The language got new words such as Lelam, Chavi, Vijagiri, Alamara, Verantha, Mesha, Chaya, Kasera and Vikari from the contact with the Portuguese.

A PEDRA DE DIGHTON!!

A pedra de Dighton consiste numa pedra que tem inscrições e devido a estas inscrições já surgiram várias teorias sobre quem tinha feito as mesmas. Estava situada originalmente a sul de Massachussets, na margem esquerda do rio Taunton, em Berkley a 9 milhas de Fall River. Hoje está conservada no seu museu.

Manuel Luciano da Silva estudou muito o assunto e afirma convincentemente que a pedra tem inscrições portuguesas assim como vai mais longe afirmando que houve colonização portuguesa nos estados de Massachussets e de Rhode Island. Fala de João Vaz Corte-Real que esteve na Terra dos Bacalhaus (Canadá) e regressou daí em 1472 à ilha Terceira. Seu filho, Gaspar Corte-Real também viajou para a América do Norte indo para a Gronelândia na primeira viagem (1501), e da segunda viagem nunca regressou, tendo seu irmão Miguel Corte-Real pedido licença a D.Manuel I para ajudar o mesmo a encontrar o seu irmão, mas também perdeu-se.

A pedra de Dighton tem algumas inscrições e Manuel Luciano da Silva atribui a autoria dessas inscrições aos portugueses, referindo ser possível ver na pedra as inscrições de «Migvel CorteReal» e a data de «1511». Para este autor esta é uma grande prova da presença portuguesa no que viria a ser o estado de Massachusetts nos EUA. Tendo em conta isto, ainda afirma que a Torre de Newport e o forte Ninigret em Charlestown, Rhode Island são da autoria portuguesa, assim como ainda refere que os portugueses deixaram descendência ao se fazer miscigenação com os índios.

A opinião científica sobre este assunto não é unânime e tendo em conta tudo o que já foi dito conclui-se o seguinte:

Os portugueses lançaram-se na busca de uma passagem pelo Noroeste a caminho de Cipango e Cathay e essas tentativas foram feitas a partir dos Açores devido à sua insularidade e por estarem no meio do Atlântico;

Gaspar Corte-Real chegou à Terra Nova em 1501 depois de John Cabbot ter avistado a mesma no ano de 1497, e sabe-se disto pois mandou um ou dois navios a dar a notícia ao rei português e nunca mais se soube dele.

Miguel Corte-Real, após conseguir a autorização de D.Manuel I, partiu em busca do irmão a partir de Lisboa em abril de 1502 e nunca mais se soube nada dele.

Para os emigrantes portugueses e açorianos nos EUA a pedra de Dighton é importante pois aumentar o orgulho pela pátria e os feitos dos seus navegadores no passado e legitima a presença portuguesa e por sua vez açoriana nos Estados Unidos. Nos dias de hoje o Museu da Emigração Açoriana possui uma réplica da pedra, assim como outros locais em Portugal.

DIGHTON’S STONE !!

Dighton’s stone consists of a stone that has inscriptions and due to these inscriptions several theories have already emerged about who had made the same ones. It was originally located south of Massachusetts, on the left bank of the Taunton River, in Berkley 9 miles from Fall River. Today it is preserved in its museum.

Manuel Luciano da Silva studied the subject a lot and convincingly states that the stone has Portuguese inscriptions as well as goes further stating that there was Portuguese colonization in the states of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. It speaks of João Vaz Corte-Real, who was in the Land of the Cod (Canada) and returned from there in 1472 to the island of Terceira. His son, Gaspar Corte-Real also traveled to North America going to Greenland on the first trip (1501), and from the second trip he never returned, having his brother Miguel Corte-Real asked king D. Manuel I for leave to help him to find his brother, but he also got lost.

The Dighton stone has some inscriptions and Manuel Luciano da Silva attributes the authorship of these inscriptions to the Portuguese, saying that it is possible to see on the stone the inscriptions of «Migvel CorteReal» and the date «1511». For this author this is a great proof of the Portuguese presence in what would become the state of Massachusetts in the USA. Bearing this in mind, he still claims that the Tower of Newport and Fort Ninigret in Charlestown, Rhode Island are of Portuguese authorship, as well as that the Portuguese left offspring when miscegenating with the Indians.

The scientific opinion on this subject is not unanimous and taking into account everything that has already been said, we can conclude:

The Portuguese launched a search for a passage through the Northwest on the way to Cipango and Cathay and these attempts were made from the Azores due to their insularity and because they are in the middle of the Atlantic;

Gaspar Corte-Real arrived in Terra Nova in 1501 after John Cabbot saw it in 1497, and this is known because he sent one or two ships to give the news to the Portuguese king and he was never heard of again.

Miguel Corte-Real, after obtaining the authorization of D. Manuel I, left in search of his brother from Lisbon in April 1502 and he was never heard from again.

For Portuguese and Azorean emigrants in the USA, the Dighton stone is important because it increases the pride of the country and the achievements of its navigators in the past and legitimizes the Portuguese and Azorean presence in the United States. Nowadays the Museum of the Azorean Emigration has a replica of the stone, as well as other places in Portugal.
