The Hayli Gubbi volcano in Ethiopia’s Afar region in East Africa erupted Sunday morning after lying dormant for 12,000 years, sending ash plumes across the Red Sea towards Yemen and Oman.
Located 500 miles (800 kilometers) northeast of Addis Ababa, the volcano erupted several hours leaving nearby Afdera village covered in ash.
Local resident Ahmed Abdela said it “felt like a sudden bomb had been thrown.” Thick smoke plumes rose 9 miles (14 kilometers) into the sky.
The eruption sent ash clouds to Yemen, Oman, India, and northern Pakistan according to the Toulouse Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre.
No casualties were reported, but local administrator Mohammed Seid said eruption could have economic implications for livestock herders.
