Great Russian poet Anna Akhmatova was born in a suburb of Odessa, and her father was a Ukrainian naval engineer descended from a noble Ukrainian cossack family. This poem, written in response to another war more than a hundred years ago, resonates all too clearly today. (Translated by Stephen Edgar.)
