Ponta Delgada está de parabéns por finalmente, ter correspondido a uma importante fase da construção do Memorial à U.S. Navy nos Açores. Agora aguardemos, porque sendo o original, é do mesmo autor do Memorial na Flandres



Em formato quase final, eis um resumo do processo (em fase de revisão linguística…)
“[…] Admiral Herbert Dunn never forget the US Navy presence in the Azores. At February 8, 1927 appeared before the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) to suggest the building of a modest memorial at Ponta Delgada in order “[…] to commemorate the services of the American Navy in that vicinity during the World War. On the motion of Colonel Markey, it was decides that the Commission should erect a monument at Ponta Delgada […]”. The chairman of the American Battle Monuments Commission, General John J. Pershing, request to the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon the construction of a monument to the U.S. Navy in Ponta Delgada, to future Memory about the I WW U.S. detachment in the Azores.
The U.S. Embassy asked the Portuguese Foreign Affairs Ministry that allowed and inform the Internal Affairs Ministry to collaborate with the Commission informing the local authorities.
“[…] Six preliminary designs (…) had been prepared by the architect, Dr. (Paul P.) Cret before the Commission decides to eliminate this proposed memorial from its project. On the motion of Senator Reed, design “B” was approved for use in case the Commission should ever build a memorial at that place […]”.
The priority was the 1st class memorials so 2nd class memorials founds like the Azorean had to be sacrificed for economic reasons.
Today, by the author and Ponta Delgada U.S. Consulate, the process with the American Battle Monuments Commission has been restarted with the support of the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon. The ABMC had a positive response and is interested to build it, if Ponta Delgada Mayor’s Office offer the land. Willingly, both countries are able in a near future, to build together this memory of World War I in the Azores, a unique Memorial in the Iberian Peninsula of the I World War […]”.
