A photo from 1989 comes to mind… it’s Jackie Chan at a benefit concert in 1989, in support for the protesters killed at Tiananmen Square in Beijing. It is a rare photo, because it’s not something Jackie Chan likes to be reminded of.
Today, Chan has very close ties to the CCP. He’s best buds with the government in Beijing. A government that pretends, until this very day, that the massacre at Tiananmen Square in 1989 never happened… Tank Man, who so bravely stood in front of a tank? Never existed. It’s all been scrubbed off the internet in China. And Jackie Chan very much toes the line, in this regard.
He does now, anyway… but in 1989? He had the heart of an activist, too. He cared. The lady next to him on the photo at the concert is Anita Mui — she helped smuggle many protesters out of Mainland China to safety after the massacre. Jackie Chan cared, once. Then he sold out big time, for profit. But he doesn’t like to be reminded of that. He hates this picture. Which is why sharing it matters all the more.
