Liberty is the foundation of our collective life and my personal sensitivity drives me to make it the basis of my political representation. However, like all values, it becomes ideological and even sometimes mortifying when defended unconditionally. On this point Hobbes said it all in his Leviathan when he emphasized that unregulated liberty inevitably results in the worst of tyranny. This regulation of individual freedoms is made necessary when the expression of one’s selfishness can gravely detrimental to the interests of all. Here we are: we are being tyrannized by a virus and its variants that threaten our health, our freedom to move, our sight, our joy of living and so much more. The gullibility of some of our fellow citizens – who refuse to be vaccinated, who imagine unrealistic dangers – cooperates in talking to this threat. In its conditions, the obligation to vaccinate seems to me less of a violation of our freedoms than the possibility to restore them.
