Other outlets should follow Crikey’s AI ban |
MEAA welcomes the commitment by Crikey to ban the use of AI in all editorial content produced by the outlet. Crikey has raised legitimate concerns about the inherent biases and inaccuracies of AI produced content, along with the theft of journalists’ intellectual property without their consent to train AI models. But the strongest reason made by Crikey for banning AI is that it cannot replicate the real work of journalists faithfully and ethically working in the public interest. MEAA commends Crikey for taking a stand for public interest journalism and we call on other outlets to do the same. In its submission to a Parliamentary inquiry into AI, MEAA has urged the government to make laws requiring the disclosure of any data used to train AI, prevent theft by AI platforms, and mitigate the threat of misinformation and disinformation.
