Keanu was born in Lebanon. His parents separated when he was three and grew up with three different step-parents.

As a boy he was diagnosed with dyslexia and dreamed of becoming a hockey player. He played goalkeeper for a junior league team in Canada, but resigned after breaking his leg to focus on the performance.

He lost his best friend, River Phoenix, in 1993 to an overdose.
