ANCIENT NORTH AFRICANS
There is ancient Rock art all over North Africa dating back to over 12,000 years ago when the Sahara desert was a Savannah. The Rock art is found in Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, Niger, Libya, Sudan etc. See the map below. The art depicts everyday life, chariots, giant buffalo, elephant, rhinoceros, and hippopotamus, animals that no longer exist in the now-desert area.
Dramatic climate change in the Saharan desert caused the inhabitants to move towards the Nile valley and other parts of Africa.
There is evidence that these people of the Sahara practiced mummification as evidenced by the discovery of the black mummy in Libya. They also appear to have followed a cattle cult which was also later practiced in Ancient Egypt.
