Great Russian poet Anna Akhmatova was born in a suburb of Odessa, and her father was a Ukrainian naval engineer descended from a noble Ukrainian cossack family. This poem, written in response to another war more than a hundred years ago, resonates all too clearly today. (Translated by Stephen Edgar.)

- Thanks for reminding me to add the translation credit (which wasn’t immediately apparent on this site).
