Indonesia’s new capital to be built on the island of Borneo will be called “Nusantara,” Indonesian Development Minister Suharso Monoarfa told reporters on Monday, quoting the president.
Parliament is expected to endorse the decision on Tuesday, paving the way for the construction of the new capital this year. The cost of the move is estimated at over $32 billion.
Nusantara, meaning archipelago, is an ancient name for the Malay Archipelago, which included Indonesia, Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore, and the southern Philippines.
