The Ká-Hó tunnel has officially opened for traffic today (Friday), in a project expected to improve the road network in the Cotai and Coloane area, the Transport Bureau (DSAT) indicated.
The two-way four-lane traffic will have a maximum speed limit of 50 km/h, with, pedestrians, bicycles, vehicles with a height of more than 5 meters, and vehicles transporting flammable, explosive or any dangerous materials not allowed access.
According to DSAT, the new access will save about 10 minutes in travel time and greatly shorten the distance between Cotai and the east side of Coloane.
The tunnel construction was divided into three sections, namely, the Southern Exterior Section, the Tunnel Section, and the Northern Connection.
The last phase of the project, the northern connection route of the Ká-Hó tunnel was awarded to Companhia de Construção Cheong Kong Limitada for MOP175.1 million (US$21.8 million) and was scheduled to be completed in 2022, with the Infrastructure Development Office (GDI) stating the project was completed three months ahead of schedule.
The main section of the Ka-Ho tunnel has been completed on November 29, 2019 with a MOP254.1 million contract was awarded to a consortium composed by China Gezhouba Group No.2 Engineering Co. Ltd. / Zhu Kuan – Fomento Imobiliário, Limitada.
Upon completion, the tunnel will facilitate the access by residents from Ka-Ho village and vehicles driving towards the Ka-Ho Port Container Terminal so that they will no longer need to circulate along the Ka-Ho Dam Road, Our Lady of Ká Hó, Rua Altinho de Ka-Ho or Estrada do Istmo, directly connecting the area with Cotai east and reducing the driving time by about 15 minutes and the traffic load on these roads.
