Há 520 anos, são introduzidos nos Açores, oferecidos, como escravos, ao capitão do donatário Vasco Corte Real.
A brutal expulsão dos judeus, ocorrida no reinado de el-rei D. Manuel, tem sido, por todos os historiadores, condenada, assim como pela opinião livre do mundo culto.
Em 1501, uma caravela, que se dirigia para África, levando grande número de judeus expulsos do continente português, arremessada por furioso vendaval, arribou à Ilha Terceira, dando as autoridades disso conhecimento a el-rei. D. Manuel, num gesto de «generosa humanidade», os ofereceu «como escravos», a Vasco Anes Corte Real, capitão do donatário, ao tempo.
Foi deste modo que se estabeleceu, na Ilha Terceira, a primeira colónia judaica. Todavia, bem ao contrário do que se fez na cidade de Lisboa, matando-se e queimando-se milhares de cristãos-novos, a Ilha Terceira os acolheu e tratou como irmãos, dando um admirável exemplo de solidariedade humana, longe, bem longe, do fanatismo que invadia a capital levando o povo à prática de cenas canibalescas.
Desde esse período longínquo que os terceirenses souberam ganhar o título, três séculos depois confirmado e selado pela frase do rei-soldado: «a terra clássica da fidelidade e o baluarte inexpugnável da liberdade portuguesa».
A expulsão dos judeus foi uma das cláusulas impostas pela princesa D. Isabel, filha dos reis católicos e viúva do príncipe D. Afonso, para anuir ao casamento com D. Manuel.
