The human occupation of the Azores Islands began 700 years earlier than the onset of Portuguese settlement of the island, which as historical documents indicate, was in the 15th century. This is the main conclusion of new research conducted by an international multidisciplinary team of scientists with the participation of the CSIC. The study published in the journal PNAS, reconstructs when, how, and under which climatic conditions the islands were colonized, in addition to the impacts of the first human settlements on the ecosystems, by analyzing sediment cores recovered from several lakes on the islands.
