A ilha de Santa Maria é detentora de um rico património edificado que varia desde o património público e particular ao património religioso, civil e militar, os quais possuem grande valor histórico-cultural, contribuindo de uma certa forma para a identidade do povo mariense.
Nestas ilhas podemos encontrar muitos exemplares de arquitetura e outras edificações que constituem o património mariense, destacando-se entre eles, a arquitetura religiosa e militar. Relativamente à primeira, um bom exemplo representativo deste tipo de património é precisamente a Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Assunção, a qual, apesar de ter sido reconstruída, foi a primeira igreja a ser edificada nos Açores. Outro elemento patrimonial existente nesta ilha é a Ermida de Nossa Senhora dos Anjos, na freguesia dos Anjos.

The island of Santa Maria has a rich built heritage that varies from public and private heritage to religious, civil, and military heritage, which have great historical and cultural value, contributing in a certain way to the identity of the people of Santa Maria island.
On these islands we can find many examples of architecture and other buildings that preceded the Marian heritage, with a special emphasis on religious and military architecture. Regarding the first, a good representative example of this type of heritage is precisely the Mother Church of Nossa Senhora da Assunção, which, despite having been rebuilt, was the first church to be built in the Azores. Another heritage element on this island is the Chapel of Nossa Senhora dos Anjos, in the parish of Anjos.
