TRIBUTE TO JILL JOLLIFFE

HUMAN RIGHTS DAY TODAY, 10 December.
A good day to remember Jill Jolliffe who died last week in Melbourne. Inter alia, war correspondent, champion of East Timor, pebble in Suharto’s boot, ASIO interest, tireless campaigner for justice for her fellow journalists murdered in Balibo and Dili during Indonesia’s 1975 invasion of East Timor, and collector of a rich archive now held in the National Library of Australia. (CHART is preparing a guide to assist with access. Go to CHART at <timorarchives.wordpress.com>)
Here is a short tribute that I paid to Jill in 2021. I would now add meeting Miguel Nuak in Dili recently, an artist/architect and son of a painter, Joao Soriano ‘Nuak’, from whom Miguel thinks Jill bought anti-Portuguese paintings (in the spirit of revolutionary Fretilin’s early iteration) in Dili in 1975, assisted by Jose Ramos-Horta, who knew English and acted as Nuak’s PR man to visiting internationals….. Miguel’s huge portraits of Nicolau Lobato and Konis Santana grace the walls of Dili’s Palacio Presidential.
