On September 11, 1973, the Chilean military, led by Augusto Pinochet, overthrew the government of Salvador Allende, starting one of the bloodiest military dictatorships in Latin America.
President Allende would commit suicide following the bombing of the Palace of La Moneda, government headquarters, where he was resisting the military coup and after the Palace was taken by the army.
