No n. the 27th of the 43rd the year of «L’Événement» (a Quebec City daily newspaper), from Wednesday, June 16, 1909, the case of Slavonia is reported from the mouth of passengers. It was, apparently, a shipwreck with a soundtrack:“The Shipwreck of SlavoniaThe tale of a few passengersEdge music plays the best tracks in his repertoire to calm panicGibraltar, 15. —The German cruise ship “Princess-Irene,” carrying first class passengers on board the English cruise ship “Slavonia” has arrived here. The “Batavia,” with the passengers from the “Slavonia,” has not arrived yet.One of the passengers, Dr. Joseph Smith, of Worcester, Massachusetts, made the sublime statement to reporters upon arrival in Gibraltar:“The fog was thick and we were marching at speed when the cruise ship, which the currents, swept off its course, went to the reefs.”“The accident occurred on June 10 [quinta-feira] at 2:30 a.m. Inhabitants of the island of Flores call the reefs on which “Slavonia,” “The Devil’s Mouth.” ““Not a single “”Slavonia”” passengers were injured and their transfer on board “”Princess-Irene”” was without incident.” ““Slavonia” had had good weather until the Azores neighborhood where it encountered fog.Shortly after the cruise ship crashed on the reefs, the water invaded the harbour, not long to win the engine room. The passengers, awakened by the noise, left their cabins and rushed onto the bridge. The first and second classes behaved admirably, but there were no third-class passengers who were very excited despite the commander and officers assuring that they were in no danger. So, to calm them down, the commander ordered the [b]ord music to play the best pieces of his repertoire, which was done. Popular air had a much more effect on the passengers of the warehouse than the words of the commander and his officers, and from the second piece of music everything was calm on board.Meanwhile, the alarm signal was sent by the telegraph on board, but it wasn’t until Thursday night that the “Princess-Irene” arrived near “Slavonia,” whose passengers were safe and sound on the island of Flores. All passengers unanimously praise the conduct of the commander, officers and crew of the Cunard Company cruise ship. All but six passengers continued their journey to Naples, aboard the “Prinzess-Irene.” “M. Milwaukee’s John Mitchell provides the following account of the shipwreck:“At 2:30 in the morning, we’re awakened by a great shock.” When we arrived on the bridge, the officers explained what had happened and almost all the passengers remained calm. Shortly after the music began to play, the most perfect order reigns on board. We were served lunch as if nothing had happened and, to our great pleasure, the music kept playing. It was only interrupted after an officer returned who, along with a few men, had gone ashore in a boat. A few hours later the country’s shipyards had carried us all to the island where we stayed until the next day to be transferred to the “Princess Irene.” “M. Mitchell adds that no one was injured and that there was only one incident. A third class passenger wanted to give himself death, but failed in his attempt. »
