MALACCA. Six women’s group in the Portuguese Settlement here have joined in the debate on the next regedor by listing four qualities required of the headman.

They said the regedor should be a good Caholic , an educated person fluent in Bahasa Malaysia and English, a resident of the settlement and have the interest of the people at heart.

Miss Lindsay Banerji, the groups’ secretary, said the regedor should be elected and not appointed by the Government.

Banerji said the community needed someone with new ideas and methods of helping the people.

“The poor no longer need material handout but a helping hand to assist their children achieve higher education,” she said.

“Adults too need help in the form of literacy classes, skills training, , and self-help projects while fishermen require assistance in securing part-time income.”

Meanwhile, the Portuguese Development Board, has disputed allegations that it comprised outsiders and that it was interfering in the campaign for the new regedor.

Board chairman Jack Sta Maria, four out of the six board members lived in the settlement while the other two were members of the community.

Sta Maria said most of the loans and aids given out by the board so far were given to those living in the settlement.

Barisan Belia Kampung Portugis leader George Alcantra said the board was not part of the settlement and should not lobby for the post.

Sta Maria said Alcantra and some and some of his committee members were not staying in the settlement.

Former regedor Michael Young , who quit on Feb 29, said although he had resigned from the board for personal reasons, he was staying neutral in the campaign. -fb posting 08.09.2014.
