Melbourne has surpassed Sydney as Australia’s largest city, but only on a technicality –thanks to a boundary change. An adjustment to city boundaries using the Significant Urban Area classification, to include the district of Melton, lifted Melbourne’s population to 4.875 million – 1,800 more than the Harbour City.Greater Sydney, which has different boundaries, is still larger than Greater Melbourne – but this won’t last for long. The federal government in January predicted Melbourne’s population would overtake Sydney’s by 2031.
