Populist politicians are power mongers by definition. They only care about their own power projects, never attend to public service and always feed on ignorance and stupidity. To push them aside, societies must raise education levels to target intellectual autonomy. Intellectually autonomous people are the best antidote to populist politicians. Do not be fooled.
As a side note, the worse kind of populists are religious fundamentalists. Populists, in general, use a distorted description of reality to manipulate people, while religious fundamentalists use fictions without any connection to reality for the same purpose. This approach is much more dangerous.
Examples: the Taliban and the Jewish religious fanatics now grabbing power in Israel. Both aim for an uneducated population that will be easier to manipulate. Jewish madrassas are as dangerous and criminal as Muslim madrassas.
