José Maria de Eça de Queirós (1845 – 1900) is considered the greatest Portuguese realistic writer, his novel The Crime of Father Amara (1875) became a hit when it was released, two films were also filmed after him. Even after almost a century and a half, it is about heavy literature (the novel is ranked in the collection Classical Beletrina! ), in the finished translation of Barbara Juršič is also an excellent, attractive read! Professional prepared word titled »Majhno mesto, big hell« Mojce Medvedšek is welcome.
The novel event is set in 19. St. , in Leirio, a smaller town in Portugal. It presents social and political life, family and social characteristics, and above all Catholic clergy, understanding of the Church and religion, human laws, women, acceptance of philosophy and science … Then inside this author with selected situations, events, words, and emotions, pieces of the main story, which points out a series of crimes with individual elements and reaches the top with the final crime of father Amar. The novel is a convincing proof of the realization that distorted Catholic morals, a priest’s naked passion under the cover of false love and his fear of church and social extinction can ruin the life of a woman and her child. The author tells the story fluent and attractive, is funny and humorous, critical and messy; not even in long descriptions is boring.
This is from Queirós. The crime of the father of amara. Translation: Barbara Jursic . (Beletrina, 2021 ) 496 p. (The Classic Balletrina).
