A thousand police arrived in New Caledonia from France and streets were relatively calm, the French High Commission said on Monday, but roads were blocked and the airport remained shut, stranding tourists on the Pacific island after a week of riots.

McBride jailing reinforces need for whistleblower reforms
MEAA is appalled at the sentence for almost six years in jail that was given to whistleblower David McBride by the ACT Supreme Court on Tuesday. McBride has been jailed for sharing classified documents with ABC journalists which revealed alleged war crimes by Australian soldiers in Afghanistan. With Australia having slipped to 39th on global press freedom rankings, governments at all levels must commit to protecting whistleblowers and journalists. The public has a right to know what its governments are doing. Without whistleblowers and journalists, corruption can flourish. A mature democracy does not shy away from scrutiny, so it’s time our political leaders truly embraced transparency and accountability.
