Sua origem é controversa, alguns arqueólogos datam suas origens por volta do ano 4 000 a.C., outros defendem que suas origens são ainda mais remotas, por volta do ano 9 000 a.C., embora a datação por carbono-14 realizada em esqueletos do cemitério paleocristão situado nessa cidade datam do ano 1 800 a.C.. Estima-se que a cidade começou a ser abandonada por completo por volta do século VIII d.C
