Thisis a discussionofneglectedAfricanarcheologyandoneoftherichestarcheology sites intheworld. SudangotitsnamefromtheArabicexpression ‘bilādal-sūdān’ (“landoftheblacks”). Byextension, WestAfricawasoncecalled ‘Western Sudan’ andtheentirecontinentwasonceknown as Ethiopia. SudanwasthelocationofAncientNubia, whereyouwillfindthebeginningsoftheHeiroglyphsemergingfromdeepinInnerAfricabeforeEgyptevenexisted, andanAfrican “pharonic” government (Ta Seti) thatwasfullydevelopedbeforethebirthofEgypt’s1stdynasty. Mr. Sealesatsilentlyonthisdiscovery for 16 years (perhapsknowinghewouldbeblackballedbyhisEuropeanpeersifheexposedthisinformation) anditwasonlyafterhediedin a tragiccaraccidentthatoneofhisassistantsbroughtthisinformationforwardin 1979 anditfirst hit intheNew York Times. ManypopulationscurrentlyinWestAfricaliketheDogon, Wolof, Bambara, Mande’ Yoruba, Bameleke’ andAkanhavehistoricalstoriesoftheirancestorsmigrationoutofthenilevalleyandintowest, central andsouthernAfricaduring a periodofchaoswiththeGreek, Roman, andArab (etc.) invasionsover a periodof 1500 years (therewere 6 major migrations).
