This morning’s crop of e-mail brought the terribly sad news of the sudden passing of George Monteiro. I have too many fond memories of George to choose from for this first, still-shocked tribute, so I’ll just share the most recent. This past summer, I spent a few weeks editing what may turn out to be George’s last book (though I wouldn’t be surprised if he had more in the pipelines, with other publishers — I’d never known a more prolific scholar). The editing was a labor of love and learning, and I’m very glad now I had the opportunity to help put the book together. I’m just sad we won’t be able to launch it with George present, as we’d planned to do.
